From Getting Started to Chartered
When we start out in life on our chosen career path we generally veer toward a qualification that will give us the technical ability to obtain employment in a particular profession – accountancy, law, engineering etc.
As we climb the ladder of success and head towards or become a member of management, most of us discover that we are not particularly well equipped or trained to deal with the additional requirements that go with the management role. We may well have touched on the subject as part of or during the course of our studies, but we probably underestimated its importance. Which of us as a young professional could have known that the word Manager covers a wide and varied range of skills, some of which are generic across management and which have little to do with our specific discipline?
It can be quite a shock when we realise that, not only do we have to implement policy and manage budgets, projects and tasks (which we might just about have realised would be on the cards), but that we need a good interpersonal style to manage people alongside which we have to be able to lead, delegate, counsel, coach and mentor. I don’t think that I gave it all much thought. Did you?
